United Energy Trading Teams Up with the Magic Yarn Project

United Energy Trading, a natural gas supplier, continues to plant roots in every community they’re involved in. Dedicated to supporting charitable organizations, their company donates both time and money. Their latest passion project is creating fantastical wigs with Project Magic Yarn.

In 2014, Magic Yarn’s founder, Holly Christensen, learned that a dear friend’s daughter had received a cancer diagnosis. As an oncology nurse, she knew the devastating effects cancer has on a child. In an attempt to ease her pain, Holly created a fantastic Rapunzel wig from yarn. The effect was magical. The joy she created was worth every hour spent on the wig. Holly then decided to make as many wigs as she could. With just one Facebook post, she went viral, and volunteers began to hop on board. From football
players to fellow moms, Magic Yarn quickly grew. Over the past four years, Project Magic Yarn has grown to include dozens of chapters, thousands of volunteers, and hundreds of happy little kids.

Cheri Lines is one of Magic Yarn’s selfless volunteers and has been a part of the UET family for years. Leader of a Utah chapter, she hosts public and private events, educating volunteers and guiding newbies in construction and design. Cheri describes how others can help: “A lot of people think you need to crochet, you don’t. Most of the volunteers do not know how. They can make personalized cards, they can make flowers for wigs, even finding candidates to send wigs to, all of it helps.”

Heather Kinghorn, a senior level UET employee and a close friend of Cheri’s, was eager to help and quickly organized a wig making party with UET employees. Their most recent donation, 150 wigs, will be dropped off to local hospitals. Magic Yarn has made over 30,000 wigs worldwide, and continues to grow each year. “At UET we jump at the chance to get involved with excellent charities like Magic Yarn,” says Heather. “It is a privilege to give our time and support to an organization that brings such joy
to children around the world.”

When UET gets involved, they go full force with money, time, and manpower. This same hard-working attitude applies to their ability to navigate the energy market. UET provides natural gas service to
California, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, and Wyoming and consistently stays one of the most reliable and cost-effective companies on the market.

Donation In Africa

Burkina Faso is loosely translated to “land of honest men.” Robert Kabore, Senior IT Specialist at United Energy Trading (UET), certainly embodies that sentiment. Robert Kabore grew up in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. He attended Dassasgho B, a school that has educated generations for decades within the community. After pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Burkina Faso and a Master’s in Colorado, Robert has settled into the UET working family for the past 6 years. He and his wife, Becky, have revisited Robert’s childhood home over the years, and 2018 was the year they decided to not only just visit, but also give back to the community they both hold close to their hearts.

Robert still stays in touch with many people in the area and is very aware of the struggles this institution faces. This school has been teaching children for over 50 years and educates over 500 students a year. Children travel from miles away to attend the year-round class schedule. Classes begin early in the morning and continue late into the night, with up to 90 children in each classroom. For these long hours that stretch over the majority of the year, the government of Burkina Faso provided around 300 pounds of rice and 200 pounds of beans for 2018/2019. This equates to about one pound of food per child for the entire year. To say that the school struggles to provide meals is an understatement.

In addition to the food shortages, the textbooks are severely outdated and school supplies are almost non-existent. Not every student receives a textbook for the school year and it is not uncommon for several students to have to share one textbook. Some students don’t have a choice and have to rely on the teacher to read aloud from the textbook to follow the curriculum.  Classrooms are bare bones with simple, well-worn bench seating and old chalkboards. This is what the Kabore’s decided to focus on in their mission to improve lives in Robert’s hometown. Tom Williams, President of UET, and a close friend to the Kabore’s, had previously donated computers to Robert’s family, and was excited at the possibility of doing more.

Robert and Becky traveled to Ouagadougou in December of 2018, near the Christmas holiday, stocked with funds donated by Tom Williams to purchase food and school supplies for Dassasgho B. Once in the country, they loaded up with new textbooks, protractors, pens and pencils, notebooks, and every necessary material that each classroom desperately needed. In addition to these wonderful gifts, Robert’s former classmates were also able to purchase 33,000 pounds of food. This is over 100 times more food than the government supplies!

A few days before Christmas, the Kabore’s coordinated and threw a celebration for the community and invited the surrounding villages, including the respected elders of each tribe. During this party, the pair fed everyone and presented their generous donations. Becky describes how it felt to see, first hand, the reaction to the supplies. “They looked filled with such hope and excitement and it was completely overwhelming.  All the kids and family were dressed in their Sunday best. As the ceremonies started, other community leaders started to filter in. I was in awe of the sense of community.  This trip would have to be one of the most profound moments in my life at this point.”

Burkina Faso used to be a hub for art and culture, flooded with tourists from all over the world, but has recently suffered from political unrest, terrorist attacks on visitors, and droughts within the region. Unsurprisingly, the wonderful citizens have suffered financially, but through it all, they remain positive and welcoming. Becky Wells Kabore reflects on what it means to change a whole generation’s educational outlook: “Providing for these students is a step in the right direction and a true, pure example of what a difference even two people can make in a generation’s life. To know we made such a difference in not only a school but a whole community brings such a tremendous sense of pride. I cannot even begin to explain the feelings that Robert and I experienced that day.  We can only hope that we are able to do this for more schools in that area in the future.”

PESCO’s other non-Florida retail operations and contracts were sold to United Energy Trading, LLC (UET)

DOVER, Del., Oct. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (Chesapeake Utilities) (NYSE: CPK) today announced that it is exiting the natural gas marketing business through the sale of the majority of the assets of Peninsula Energy Services Company, Inc. (PESCO), the Company’s natural gas marketing subsidiary. To date, the Company has executed three separate transactions to sell PESCO’s assets and contracts:

  • PESCO’s Florida retail operations will be sold to Gas South LLC.
  • PESCO’s other non-Florida retail operations and contracts were sold to United Energy Trading, LLC (UET).
  • PESCO’s Mid-Atlantic wholesale contracts and Chesapeake Utilities’ Delaware division, Maryland division and Sandpiper Energy Asset Management agreements were sold to NJR Energy Services Company (NJRES).

The Company expects to recognize a gain from the sale of the assets in 2019 upon the closing of the transactions. More information will be provided in the Company’s third quarter earnings press release and Form 10-Q report as well as subsequent filings.

“After performing a strategic review of the PESCO business unit, we determined that our efforts should be focused on the strategies that support our core energy delivery businesses. The level of investment in infrastructure required to achieve the scale needed for future growth meant that PESCO would not achieve the target returns we expect,” noted Jeff Householder, President and CEO of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation. “As a result, we made the decision to exit this business, and have done so in a way that reduces future volatility in our earnings, recovers our investment and improves our earnings outlook going forward.”

“Commitment to quality service, access to supply, and service offerings were the driving factors for the selected counterparties. We are working closely with Gas South, UET, and NJRES to ensure each transaction is executed in an efficient manner with minimal impact to the respective customers,” added Bill Hancock, Assistant Vice President of PESCO. “We have one remaining small book of business, our Producer Services portfolio, which we are targeting to sell by the end of the year.”

Supporting Hurricane Harvey

Denver, CO, September, 2017—United Energy Trading, LLC (UET) has a reputation for compassion and involvement in our community. Following the effects of Hurricane Harvey, UET collected, transported and distributed relief donations to Houston, Texas. An immense amount of clothing, blankets, toiletries, toys, and other items for young children were driven down immediately following the storm. With UET’s presence in the Gulf Coast energy markets, UET felt compelled and obligated to contribute what we could.

Thanks to Gabriel Garcia, an employee at UET, our employees were also able to contribute collectively, adding to the donation that was driven down to Houston—it was a firm wide effort in our Denver office. In addition to the many items collected, UET management stepped in, donating over 500 t-shirts.

Gabriel Garcia has a big connection with the Houston area explaining, “UET is very active in the USGC markets and many of my colleagues in the Houston area are personal friends, so I felt compelled to do something. Denver shelters donated at least 200 pounds of clothing, while UET followed suit with the donation drive at the office as well.” Following the collection, Gabriel personally drove a packed Uhaul full of donations, all the way to Texas. Without the selflessness of Gabriel, compassion of his coworkers, and a management team that endorses charity, such actions would have never been possible.

It is truly powerful to see so many compassionate employees step up and do what is right in a time of need.

Operation Santa

Denver, CO, December 14, 2017 –(PR.com)– For the second year in a row, United Energy Trading, LLC (UET) has partnered with the Tennyson Center for Children (Tennyson Center) for Operation Santa. The Tennyson Center is an organization which is dedicated to assisting children who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect, creating a new, more positive environment for them to grow. The Tennyson Center accepts children from ages 5-18, in a multitude of programs depending on the individual needs of the child. Each youth is given a personalized approach to help conquer their challenges and change the course of their life. By participating in Operation Santa with the Tennyson Center, UET helped to provide well deserved presents to children in need this holiday season.

After becoming aware of the Tennyson Center through a former employee, UET dove into the giving spirit and adopted an entire family of seven. This family has been living in Colorado after escaping a war-torn country, and sometimes struggles to make ends meet. The Tennyson Center provided UET with a personalized Christmas wish list from each member of the family. UET was able to fulfill the complete wish lists, including a PlayStation, shoes, and coats for the entire family creating a magical Christmas morning.

Almost half of the Tennyson Center funding stems from donations, helping provide the exceptional, individualized care they are known for. Programs like Operation Santa helps with that cause. By donating, anyone can feel the holiday spirit by purchasing gifts for one child, many, or even a whole family.

“I am so proud of how UET raises money, we’ve never tied ourselves to specific fundraisers or charities, we hear about a family in need or a cause through close co-workers and we rally around that need. We come together as a company.” -Heather Kinghorn Senior Contract Administrator/Risk Analyst for UET.

United Energy Trading Gives Back to US Troops Overseas

Denver, CO, December 22, 2017 –(PR.com)– United Energy Trading, LLC (UET) has long been a company of compassion. Their charitable work often stems from family members or close friends bringing a cause to their attention, and the staff of UET rallying around it. This was the case for Micki Mills, a long-time friend of Heather Kinghorn, Senior Contract Administrator/Risk Analyst for UET. Micki’s son, Cahn Wadhams, is a commissioned Captain in the United States Air Force, and on his first deployment overseas. For Micki, sometimes this is an overwhelming fact. “Some people don’t remember that there are people out there fighting for our freedom and they can’t see their families. They are serving our country, and not everyone appreciates that.” Understandably, this fact gets harder for her family during the holidays.

When speaking to her son, they get to e-mail and text back and forth, Micki learned that the holidays for the troops were an afterthought. Captain Wadhams expressed his disappointment during Thanksgiving, telling Micki they didn’t have enough for the 410 servicemen in his command and Christmas would not be any different. This was a reality that Micki was unwilling to accept. She started writing Christmas and thank you cards to every single one of those Airmen. Driven in this task only by love and compassion, she confided in her dear friend Heather. Heather then suggested they go to Tom Williams (Tom), President of UET, and see what a whole company could do for the United States military.

Tom was enthusiastic about the cause, immediately agreeing to donations and support of the troops. UET sprang into action and custom printed 410 t-shirts, bought 410 packs of beef jerky and gum. These gifts will be given to the troops Christmas morning, making sure each one has something to open that day. Micki couldn’t be happier with the response. “It makes me feel very lucky and fortunate to have such good friends in them. Sometimes you don’t know what to do until someone steps forward, Tom says let’s do something, it gets done. To know somebody as generous as Tom makes you feel that there really are people out there who care about people in the military.”

There is a big-hearted, open-handed approach to charity within the United Energy Trading family. Co-workers and peers are the driving force behind the various causes and charities that UET gets behind. It stems from a management team that is encouraging towards giving back, a company that looks forward to the future with green initiatives and inward to the community, supporting generous organizations in Denver Colorado.
