City Reduces Natural Gas Costs With New Open Market Strategy

Switching to 3rd Party Provider Could Result in Big Savings

(FORT COLLINS – March 7, 2017) The City of Fort Collins says it expects to pay lower costs for natural gas this year by switching to 3rd party provider United Energy Trading, LLC (UET).   Since deregulation such providers offer alternative choices by competing with traditional utility companies. Colorado-based UET says its commercial and industrial customers can save an average of 15% on their annual natural gas costs.

Since we’re accountable to city residents, we’re serious about energy management and are always looking to maximize savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With United Energy we believe we’ve found an energy partner that has the city’s best interest in mind,” said Stu Reeve, Energy Manager, Operation Services, City of Fort Collins.

Beginning last month, an agreement with UET will provide natural gas to heat the city’s administration buildings and keep city buses powered by natural gas running. UET says that lower costs are just a part of the overall picture. Their experienced account managers based in the Denver-area have trading and price management expertise to provide on-going guidance to help meet the city’s particular requirements.

With our headquarters located here in Colorado, our team is available at a moment’s notice to assist the City of Fort Collins with any questions or concerns that may arise regarding their use of natural gas,” said Tom Williams, United Energy Trading, LLC President. “In addition to passing cost savings on to the City, our clients benefit from receiving support from our dedicated staff who are committed to providing the highest level of customer service in the industry.

When the Colorado energy industry was deregulated in 1999, the stage was set for 3rd party natural gas providers to compete with traditional utility companies. UET began operations in 2002 and, having extensive experience in the wholesale market, began providing natural gas directly to commercial and industrial customers in Colorado in 2014. Although it has retail operations in over 10 states, UET is seeing rapid growth among its gas customers along the Colorado Front Range.

Over the last 12 months, UET began providing natural gas to many local organizations including:

    • Denver Public Schools
    • City of Loveland
    • Aurora Public Schools
    • Littleton Public Schools

Natural gas distributed by UET is delivered through existing pipelines. UET energy traders search the country for the best prices and buy natural gas in bulk, then pass the savings on to their customers, who also avoid paying certain fees that traditional utility companies may charge.
